Project Objective

Create a desk light that uses physical interaction to seamlessly transition between relaxation and work.

Desk Spaces

Many desk spaces suffer from poor lighting—too dim, too harsh, or poorly placed—causing eye strain, glare, and reduced productivity.

Many college students need a good lighting source for long study sessions and a comfortable work environment.

Who requires functional lighting spaces?

Design Criteria

Must

The light should be functional for both work and ambience, with adjustable brightness that allows a seamless transition between the two.

Should

The interactive function of the light should be intuitive and makes transitioning between modes effortless.

Nice to have

A none visible power source with adjustable hues.

Process

Finding a Fitting Form and Function

Guided by research and design criteria, I generated a wide range of concepts to find a design that ensure a quality solution

Intially focused on form development

Initial Concepts

As I continued to develop the form, I became more inspired by the natural flow and curve and flow of nature. I wanted to combine that with a raw, material look that came from the industrial style of design

The Industrial Flow

By now, I narrowed down on a light that would sit overhead a desk and have panels so the direction of the light could be adjusted. I picked the bottom right concept that would allow the users the flip three seaparte panels to adjust the work/ambience of lighting

Design

The Manufacturing Process

To construct the light, I designed mechanisms in fusion and 3D printed the model. I added all the core electronics and finished the surface with a sleek, matte apperance.
