Project Objective

Design an functional, lightweight and visually compelling stool that meets specific real work constraints

Coffee Shops

Calm but busy environments, great for both collaboration and relaxing. Often designed in the Industrial style creating and urban, authentic feeling

A style defined on its emphasis on exposed materials like steel and wood, creating a sleek, natural design.

Process

Developing an Aesthetic

Based on my inspiration, I played around with various forms and materials to find an ideal design

First concepts trying to find a form that I enjoyed

Initial Exploration

I enjoyed the triangular, hourglass forms and iterated more on that

Refined Forms

CAD Models

Process

Finding a Fitting Form and Function

Guided by research and design criteria, I generated a wide range of concepts to find a design that ensure a quality solution

Design

The Manufacturing Process

This process require cutting and sanding wood, 3d printing pieces, jointing parts, and apply finishes

Planning

To attach wood to wood, I planned to use domino joint

I would 3d print triangular rod to simulate steel. I would use it as a sleeve on top of a steel rod.

Cut up 10’ board to create square planks to cnc triangle shape

Initial Setup

Aesthetic tapers mathematically modeled to fit

Chamfers

Slight horizontal taper to reduce the visual weight of stool

Tapering

Cut joint angles at 25 degrees to meet the two pieces of wood

Joint Angle

Drilled holes for wood connections and metal pipe connections

Drilling

Connecting all pieces

Assembly

Applying oil based finish

Finishing
